Brian Maughan (MFA, BFA) is a nationally known sculptor who moved to Yellow Springs in 2006 from New York City. He was born in Calgary, Canada and grew up in the Alberta oil fields until the age of ten, then moved with his parents to western Montana. Attending the San Francisco Art Institute, Maughan earned a BFA and an MFA. Maughan has worked in various media, but sculpture has dominated his efforts. In the last 20 years he has worked principally in ceramic clay, much of which is then cast in bronze. Recent installations include “Bob Uecker,” radio announcer, and “Bud Selig,” Commissioner of Major League Baseball, in Miller Park, Milwaukee.

I am extremely grateful for having been invited to participate in this first YS scup symp. I have lived in town for nearly 8 years, but my understanding and admiration of it were catapulted to a grand new level from this experience (CAN ADD: from engaging with and listening to the remarkable and enthusiastic students from all the schools; from talking with the many person who visited daily and attended the talks, and from working with the other participating sculptors, the on-sight volunteer staff and event organizers). I hope my sculptures reflect some of their (the) spirit (of those who attended) and the spirit of this wonderful town. I know the event has rekindled my enthusiasm for my own art and opened my spirit in new directions.
